  • Build Site Volunteers

Habitat for Humanity is most famous for enlisting the help of skilled and unskilled volunteers to build our houses. People who experience working on a Syracuse Habitat for Humanity house build report a sense of accomplish at the end of the day. They can point to the house and tell their friends that they help put on roof shingles. And they feel pride knowing that their work was vital to the building of one more home for a deserving, hardworking, low-income family. For more information on home builds, visit the Builds page, or click here.

    Donations to Build

Let's face it, it costs money to build our homes. We understand that your time is valuable, and we truly appreciate your willingness to volunteer your time to help us build houses. However, Syracuse Habitat for Humanity purchases the materials you use during your day of volunteering. Given the current economic climate, Syracuse Habitat for Humanity asks that individual volunteers consider making a suggested donation of $25 per day if possible when volunteering on a house build to help defray the cost of the materials you will use that day. Groups are asked to consider a donation of $50 per person per day.

Please remember that your donation helps us all to achieve a shared vision: to build safe, decent and affordable homes for hardworking, low-income families who would not be able to live in safety without your generosity. For questions or to discuss this further, please feel free to contact the Syracuse Habitat for Humanity office.

There are so many ways raise funds. If you need some ideas, visit out funraising ideas page.

  • How volunteering for a build works

    1. You contact Carl Sharak our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteercoordinator@syracusehabitat.org with the dates you would like to work.
    2. Carl gets back to you, letting you know if we need volunteers for those dates.
    3. On the day you are scheduled you show up at the build for which you are scheduled and look for our construction manager.
    4. If you found the experience rewarding contact the Volunteer Coordinator and have yourself scheduled again.
  • The Volunteer Spirit

    • Everyone wants Saturdays. If you want to work on a Saturday you will have lots of competition and it will be hard to schedule you. If you can take a day off work to help us on a weekday we would be most grateful.
    • Be patient. We work to please but to keep funds going towards houses we have a very small staff and may take a while to get back to you. Be persistent, check in regularly but please be kind. If it's urgent give us a call in addition to emailing.
    • Be flexible. Construction is unpredictable by nature. Mostly we don't know exactly what you will be doing until you are doing it. Materials arriving on time, the weather, the speed of a crew, permits and many other factors affect how a build progresses.
  • But what if construction is not your cup of tea?

Well there are MANY, MANY other ways you can volunteer at SHFH.

Give us a call, we can work something out.
