Americorps Summer VISTA Ends his Third Week

Another week at Syracuse Habitat for Humanity has come to a close. By my count, I just finished my third week of eight as a summer VISTA. With each week I become more and more proud to work for Syracuse Habitat for Humanity.

Last week flew by and I was barely able to catch my breath. Unlike previous weeks, I did not have a specific task to accomplish or a goal to work toward. Instead I did a little bit of everything. I did everything from stocking doors at the ReStore and assisting customers to editing marketing manuals. By the end of the week, I was ready to do something more long term. I got my wish in the form of database entry and development.
While I still wish that I was directly working with volunteers, this new project is exactly what the VISTA program is all about. It’s about capacity building and strengthening our organization. After my tenure is finished, Syracuse Habitat for Humanity will be stronger and be able to use volunteers more effectively. We will be able to easily track total volunteer hours by site, year, and even individual. All of this will help us to honor our volunteers, which are the heart and soul of our organization.

We will also be able to better use volunteers to suit our needs and their interests. Skills and experience will be viewed as assets and we will develop a more streamlined efficient machine. At least ten thousand hours of volunteer work was put forth at Syracuse Habitat for Humanity last year alone. That’s hundreds of thousands of dollars saved and invested into new homes. If we paid for construction, office work, Restore donation collection, etc our organization would fall apart. That’s why my VISTA experience this summer is so meaningful.

That’s how I feel at the beginning of my fourth week as a VISTA for Syracuse Habitat for Humanity. While I may not see the full impact of my work, I am sure that what I am doing is very important and am excited about the next few weeks.

Importance and Spirit of Building Energy Efficient Housing,

Did you know that Syracuse Habitat build our houses with energy efficiency in mind?

Did you also know that as Syracuse makes every attempt to be the Green Capital of the World that Syracuse Habitat for Humanity is ahead of the curb?

Our green programs do not stop at the Syracuse ReStore, which is a blue Ribbon Recycler and has won numerous awards. Instead “being green” is part of the mission of Syracuse Habitat for Humanity and Habitat for Humanity International. Taking passages from the scripture about loving the Lord and everything of the Lord including the earth, Habitat for Humanity International promotes the idea of earth stewardship for all of its affiliates (Psalm 24, the Gospels). For HFHI, sustainable building starts at the very beginning when the site is picked. Green building is about health, energy efficiency, and water efficiency. All of which are an essential part of Syracuse Habitat’s mission.

We build houses that are 100% energy efficient, but what does this mean? It means that we choose energy star appliances. These could include high-efficiency front-end washers, induction stove stops, high-efficiency gas-range hoods, and energy-star refrigerators. Some of these appliances even qualify the owners for rebates on their energy bills. Syracuse Habitat’s green energy program doesn’t stop with appliances the plans themselves also help cut down costs and energy usage. The typical Syracuse Habitat ranch more energy efficient that the multi-level colonial houses in the area. Our clients typically move from older, less efficient houses into ones with new windows, new heating systems, and less chance for heat escape. It saves them money on their energy bills and helps promote a more livable future.

Syracuse Habitat for Humanity is not just concerned with energy efficiency, but also makes every effort to save water. Low flow or dual flow toilets are part of HFHI’s building code as are native climate appropriate plants. Likewise dishwashers are energy star appropriate and help reduce water use. This all helps make sure that the people of Syracuse and people worldwide have clean water to drink.

Thus at Syracuse Habitat we don’t just build houses, we build hope. We build hope with our homeowners with an affordable place to live. We build hope for their neighbors by helping to revitalize a neighborhood, the near Westside in Syracuse. We build hope for the future by making energy efficiency and sustainability part of our plan.
